Training
|
Walter Thompson (Contractors) Ltd is one of the
few General Contractors that has continued to directly employ Craft
Operatives and provide proper Craft Apprentice training for new
entrants.
All the traditional building trades - bricklaying, carpentry &
joinery, groundworks, concreting and drainlaying are undertaken by
our direct employees.
We have also continued to provide opportunities for school-leavers
to enter the industry on traditional Craft Apprenticeships, and more
recently modern Construction Apprenticeships in each and every one
of, at least, the last fifty years, regardless of trading
conditions. We now have second and third generations of some
families with us.
We operate the Construction Skills Certification Scheme,
administered by the Construction Industry Training Board, for all
Site Operatives and Managers/Technical Staff.
Several of our Craft Apprentices have represented the Area, Region
and even their Country in Skill Competitions.
All our Plant Operators are also CITB Registered and have received
and required Health & Safety training.
Site Operatives who use specific tools suck as Mobile Access
Platforms, Scaffold Towers, Stihl Saws, Cartridge Operated Tools,
etc. have received the required training to enable them to safely do
so.
We also recruit school-leavers at Technician level to train in
Quantity Surveying and Estimating, provide year-out site based
placements for Degree Students and recruit Graduates to train in
Site Management and Quantity Surveying.
All our employees receive Health & Safety training relevant to their
position and level of responsibility, which ranges from Tool Box
Talks on site for operatives to Safety Management Courses for senior
staff. All Site Managers are qualified First Aiders and have
received training in Site Safety Supervision, Scaffold Inspection,
C.O.S.H.H. Assessments, etc. |

Health & Safety
|
We are fully committed to Health and Safety and directly employ a
dedicated Health and Safety Manager for the Group, Steve English,
who spent 12 years with Northern Countries Safety Group, a Health
and Safety advisory organisation specialising in construction.
Steve visits all our sites and workplaces on a regular basis
undertaking stringent Health and Safety Audits and providing advice
and training to our employees.
Our Site Managers are qualified First Aiders and have attended
C.I.T.B. Site Management and Site Safety Supervision Courses
together with specific training courses including Scaffold
Inspection, C.O.S.H.H. Assessments, etc.
All Operatives are registered under the C.I.T.B. Construction
Skills Certification Scheme which includes a one day Health and
Safety Appreciation Course. Our Plant Operators are registered under
the C.I.T.B. Plant Operator Certification Scheme which also involves
Health and Safety Appreciation Training.
All Operatives and Site Visitors receive site specific Safety
Induction together with Training relevant to their duties, e.g.
Abrasive Wheels, Confined Spaces, etc. and attend ‘Tool Box Talks’
on relevant subjects.
We have suffered no fatalities or serious injuries on our sites
during the last five years and have submitted RIDDOR reports for
minor incidents as follows:
2006 = 4
2005 = 3
2004 = 5
2003 = 6
2002 = 5
2001 = 7
There have been no Improvement or Prohibition Notices issued to us
or Prosecutions by HSE.
We Monitor our health and safety performance against the
Constructing Excellence Key Performance Indicators. In 2006 we had 4
reportable accidents which results in a benchmark score of 98% which
compares extremely favourably with the Industry norms.
